Ojas

The essence of vitality in Ayurveda: the end product of good digestion, associated with immunity, radiance and resilience to stress.

Ojas literally means "vigour, radiance" in Sanskrit. In Ayurvedic physiology it is the most refined essence produced by digestion: when food is properly transformed by agni and the seven tissues (dhatus) are built correctly, the result is this subtle reserve of vitality. Ojas is to the Indian tradition what a savings fund is to a household: what allows you to withstand infections, dips in energy and emotional shocks.

A person rich in ojas is said to be recognisable by a glowing complexion, restorative sleep, a stable mood and solid immunity. Conversely, ojas is depleted by chronic lack of sleep, overwork, excess (screens, stimulants, restrictive diets) and undigested emotions — a picture that closely resembles what we would now call exhaustion or burnout.

To rebuild it, Ayurveda relies less on supplements than on regularity: getting to bed before 11 pm, eating warm and nourishing food, slowing down. Certain foods have a reputation as "ojas builders": dates, soaked almonds, ghee, warm spiced milk, raw honey. You will find the annotated list in the foods that build ojas, and their role in the body’s defences in our guide to strengthening immunity the Ayurvedic way.

A concrete example: the traditional evening drink made with dates, almonds, cardamom and saffron is a classic "ojas recipe" — a simple habit for convalescence or times of deep fatigue.
